At the Mitchell County Courthouse, 1995, plans were finalized to begin offering GED study opportunities to those who were locally incarcerated.  Pictured are Dr. Mark Milliron, Vice President of Academic Services (at that time); L to R, Shelia Laws, MCC Basic Skills Assessment/Retention Specialist; Linda “Butch” Woody, Mitchell County Clerk of Court; and Joyce Peterson Boone, MCC Basic Skills GED Recruiter/P.R.

Mitchell High School graduates, Candace Martin and Colby Boston, were awarded Scholarships of $500 each by the Yancey-Mitchell Board of REALTORS.  Candace and Colby will continue their education at Mayland Community College.  Pictured with the students is Frances Goforth, Scholarship Committee Chairperson.  $500 Scholarships were also awarded to two students from Yancey County.

PGCDC kids created a quilt to donate to Sejal Neas who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in May. On the first row from left to right are Meredith McGee, Layton Fox, Coltin Marlowe, Monica Buchanan, Brenna Horney, Brianna Greene, and Hannah Hoilman holding the quilt the students created. On the second row from left to right are Katie Tolley, Alicia Hall, Erica Mitchell, Callie Blevins, Libby Bryant, and Dallas Marlowe. Pictured on the third row are Taylor Silvers, Keegan Young, John Tolley, Alisha Greene, Cheyenne Matson, Lane Letner, and Kaitlyn Renfro. PGCDC school aged children teachers pictured from left to right are  Jessica Howell and Sue Ann Rose.

The spider lily is one of the flowers currently in bloom in this area.
