Crush Baseball has played in three 13 & under tournaments finishing 2nd and 1st in the last two. Tri County Bowl Championship

The Middle School Football championship game will be played at heritage High School on Tuesday 10/14 between the Harris Blue Devils and the Cane River Rebels. Kickoff time is 6pm with live coverage on WKYK, WTOE, www.wkyk.com and www.wtoe.com.

Pizza Hut - Radio - Player of the Game

Each week, during the Friday Night High School football games the WKYK and WTOE broadcast teams will select a Mountain Heritage and Mitchell "Pizza Hut" Player of the game.  The winners each week will receive a large pizza from - "The Pizza Hut of Spruce Pine", for WTOE and "The Pizza Hut of Burnsville, for WKYK.

Mitchell High Recognition Nights

The following dates will be recognition nights for Mitchell County Youth League and middle school teams. All youth league and middle school players who wear their jersey will get in free to the game and will be recognized during the evening. Dates are as follows:

Youth League/Middle School Football Recognition Night- Friday, October 10 vs. Polk County. Game time is 7:30pm and players will be recognized at halftime.

YL/MS Soccer Recognition Night- Wednesday, Oct. 22 vs. Avery. Match time is 6pm and players will be recognized at halftime.

YL/MS Volleyball Recognition Night-Tuesday, Oct. 14th vs. Avery. Match time is 5pm and players will be recognized between the JV and Varsity games.

Basketball Benefit Featuring the Tiny Trotters

The world’s smallest basketball team, the Tiny Trotters,  will be playing the Yancey County Superstars on Friday, October 17th for a Benefit Basketball Game at Heritage High School. Game time is 7:00pm, Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students. To see a photo of the Tiny Trotters, click here

5th Annual Town Square Scamper 5K

The 5th Annual Town Square Scamper 5K & Fall Foliage Stroll will be held
on October 18, 2008 starting at 9:00 a.m. The event is hosted by the
Town of Burnsville and benefits the Yancey County Schools Foundation.
There were over 230 participants in last year's race and the race is
part of the Asheville Track Club's Grand Prix Circuit. Information and

New event this year to be held in conjunction with the Scamper is The Downtown Ramble!  This walk is a loop course that will allow walkers to complete either 1, 2, or 3 loops!  The loop is from the town square in front of First Baptist Church, down East Main, up Azalea Lane, and back on North Main to the Square!  Registration for the Ramble is $5.00.  This event is being held to promote fitness for our school students and our community!

The Yancey County Schools Foundation invites everyone to come out and enjoy the 5K Scamper, the 5K Fall Foliage Stroll, and the Downtown Ramble!  It’s sure to be fun for everyone!!

Co-ed Volleyball League Registration

Anyone interested in having a team in the upcoming Co-ed Volleyball League needs to call the Yancey County Recreation Department by October 24th at 682-3814.  Games will be played on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at the newly remodeled old Burnsville gym.

Registration Open for Second Annual Monster Dash 5K

2008 Registration has opened for the 2nd Annual Monster Dash 5K. The event will take place Saturday, October 25th at 9:00 am. This challenging trail run will traverse through Eliada's historic and wooded campus, which will be decorated in a Halloween theme especially for the event. Runners will pass through the 'haunted orchard', an old cemetery, and along the spooky trail before crossing the spider web finish line. Runners are encouraged to wear family-friendly costumes. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 male and female age category winners and the top 3 winners overall, as well as for best costume.

The Monster Dash 5K qualifies as an Asheville Track Club Grand Prix race. Registration is $20 and includes chip timing, snacks & beverages, and a t-shirt for the first 100 registrants. The event will also include a free 1-mile fun run, registration for which will be on-site the day of the race.

Runners and volunteers are still needed to help make the event successful. Registration and more information is available online at www.eliada.org/race, or by contacting Kelley Corwin at 254.5356 x 156 or kcorwin@eliada.org. All proceeds benefit the children and families served by Eliada.

Later in the day, the course will become the "Trick or Treat Trail". Sponsors of the 5K will be on hand to pass out candy to invited children's groups along the wooded trail. Face painting and other children's activities will also be available. Scouting organizations, youth groups, or other children's organizations who are interested in learning more should contact Kelley Corwin at 254.5356 x 156 for information.
